Pumps – basically there are only two types of pumps positive displacement and centrifugal – The differences in each are that positive displacement pumps pump – they come in many forms diaphragm, gear, and impeller pumps – Basically what ever is at the pump whether air, water oil gets pump thru the pump – some examples are your engine oil pump and raw water pump, fresh water pump –

Centrifugal pumps are much like are NOT positive displacement meaning that the fluid you intent to pump must flood the impeller – these pumps will not pump air and will become air bound if air gets to them – examples are your engine circulating pump, bilge pump and Air conditioning cooling pump – that is why they are either submerged in water like a bilge pump or are below the water line like a AC cooling pump –

So why am I mentioning this now – well winterization is upon many of us and we will be winterizing these pumps and you need to know which ones will pick up the anti freeze and which ones need to be flooded before they will pump the antifreeze –
