A few years ago, during one of many times that we where looking at fishing tackle in our local Walmart, my son spied upon a pair of Shakespeare 6ft Ugly Stick spinning rod combos for $29.95 each. He suggested that we should buy the pair and give them a try. We originally bought them to keep on the boat rigged with a Hopkins or Kastmaster to use on the schools of Bluefish. They worked out well and we have purchased numerous others that for some reason guests without tackle pass up my high end bait cast rods and comment on the feel and action of the Ugly Sticks. We now have 8 of them and only had problems with a cracked eye on one. My neighbor's father in law had problems with a reel, but he is hard on all tackle and does no maintenance at all. You should see his 3 year old boat. They are available at most chain stores, Bass Pro and Cabella's for the same price and they are an inexpensive rod to have for that guest who is questionable or a rod for yourself. We caught many a weakfish on them. If anyone has any comments about these or any other rod please post.

John, what kind of reel is it. I have a ugly stick comboed up to a Penn 6500ss my father bought me 11 years ago for my 21st birthday and is a great rod. I know that it will not come with a Penn reel but, I think that sounds great. I need a couple more the wife will argure but what the heck!!

Jack,

It is a Shakespeare reel with 8lb test. I believe it is a medium action rod. It is great for bay fishing. It probably won't last as long as your Penn. I have a "few" Penn reels, spinning, conventional and bait casting that are over 30 years old and still being used. But for $29.95, line included it is hard to beat. I just looked it up in the Bass Pro 2008 Master Fishing Catalog and they have it for the same price and I just noticed that if you buy it from them you get a FREE UGLY STICK TACKLE BAG.
