Be sure to have a way of measuring the length of your catch. With all the regulations and enforcement, besides it is the right thing to do to help preserve the fishery it is a must do. I like to keep track of the length and weight of the fishery season after season. A good cheap out is to use a yard stick. My new replacement came from an open house at a local garden equipment center. In the past I obtained them from a number of sources including banks and a politician who went door to door handing them out and they read, "How do I measure up?" They can be also purchased from stores for a nominal price. I also keep a tape measure for longer lengths but the yard stick handles 99% of the chores.
