Left at 5:30. Caught the outgoing tide. Weakfish one after another. They hit sandworms and a host of lures. They ranged from 12 to 18". We lost count at 15. We kept 2 for a dinner. We also had a number of black seabass that we released. Fished until 8:00.

Nice trip ,John, where were you ? Up in barnegat or down by me in the Mullica.
I think I'm going to have a problem getting my Grandaughters (12 & 14) up for a 5:30 AM fishing trip. Do you know what I mean? |

Leo,
We were up in Barnengat Bay fishing by the Nuke Plant. My brother Jeff and his buddy bailed out of the trip. I know what you mean about your grand daughters. That is a tough age. My 23 yr. old is getting married tommorrow and that is about the age that I lost her as my fishing partner. She used to amaze my father when she went with him. She used to tell him that she was the bait girl and that she would get the bait and rebait his hooks because she could do it better. She now goes once or twice a year, same as my wife. I still have my son, who will be 16 this November. He can't wait to go to the funny car reunion with me on Sunday at Englishtown to watch a good friend of mine compete. He still likes to hang out with us as we work on our "classic toys" or just remenice about the "good old days" and it is funny how the cars always run better when you talk about the past. You always forget about the Rambler (it turned out to be a Rebel) that smoked your 1969 Camaro. The guy who was with me, who broke my chops the most was beat by a Gremlin (it was really a Gremlin X ) with his new 1973 Z28 Camaro and I was with him. Leo, sometimes they surprise you and they really enjoy going and they may be looking forward to it. Watch the tide charts and the Mullica should be the place for weakies. Next week I have to work, but I am off the following week. Let me see what is happening. This past week has not been a good week for my family. My cousin's (a very close one) wife had an accident Monday and they are not sure if she is going to pull through and an in law had a cancer reaccurance and has been given 6 mo to a year. A little damper on the wedding but we are not letting it get us down. |

08/08/08: Left this morning with my brother Dan, my son John and 2 cousins. A repeat of yesterday. It was my cousin Andy's first fishing trip and he landed a 20" weakie. We took his picture and we know that he will be showing it off this afternoon at the wedding. Everyone caught his fill of fish and we had a good bonding experience, for we all don't get together that much because of logistics. Left at 5:30, back at 9:00. We released all the fish and got a comment from a disgrunteled fisherman passing by. The comment was, "You must like to put salt in a wound. You catch those f@#$%!g fish and then release them as to thumb your nose at us." My brother and cousins got a good laugh at that and that was our saying the rest of the morning.
Tight Lines,

Sunday, 8/10/08: Left @ 5:30, My son and I had a number of small weakfish, the largest 14" and bluefish. We had a lot of boat traffic, a lot of it going and coming from the popular anchoring party spot at Tice's Shoal, so early in the morning with a bad weather report, including jet skis by 7:30 am and a lot of noisy anglers trying to get a close up of what we were catching and then stop and follow us. We did not wait for the out going tide, but decided to call it a day at 8:30. All fish were released. They were caught on sandworms, Berkley Power Worms, one of my son's hand tied lures tipped with squid, modified bucktail and a modified 3" Storm Shad that resembles a Spot.

That sounds like a nice couple of trips, nice going John !! I took them all out on Sat. about 11AM,(5:30..Ha.!!) Figured I'd make a run to the LE REEF and see if they could nail a few fluke. Within 30 mins. of getting there the wind really kicked up, we fished for about an hour and a half and when 12 ounces couldn't hold bottom, we decided to pack it in. The kids were determined to go into the cabin, I warned them, but about 15 mins. later they were both sick, seas were running 3 to 5 and couldn't return any faster than 10knts. or the waves would come over the bow and splash thru the front window to give everyone a nice shower, anyway they all enjoyed the ride even the one back, so as long as they were happy then I suceeded in occupying their time constructively and by the time the boat was all cleaned up , they had had enough, they slept real well. As far as fish, we never even got a bite. I am planning a tuna trip for my son-in -law on Tues.,about 40 miles out, it was originally scheduled for Monday but they changed the weather on me , so now it's set up for the next day. I hope we get as lucky as everyone else that has run out there this week, they all got Bluefin over 47" but they couldn't follow up with the one between 27 and 47 to get limits. One fish a boat it tough to justify, most guys started there with the bluefin then went on out to the eastern wall of Toms canyon to fill out on yellow fin, nice ones too, 60 to 80 and some over a 100, but it doubles the distance of the trip. OK,pal hope you and the family enjoy the wedding and good luck to the Bride and Groom....C ya later.....Leo |

Leo,
Back to work this week and for some long hours. I hope that you and your son-in-law did well on your tuna trip. The wedding went well on Friday. The ceremony was held on a deck on the beach and we just missed the deluge. They left for their honeymoon at 3:00am on Saturday to make their connections for their cruise in Hawaii. I doubt that I will be out fishing until Monday morning. My boss already informed me that I will probably be working Saturday and Sunday. I am on vacation next week and he asked me to work at least next Saturday and possibly Sunday. It is pension building time and you have to grab the ot when it is there.
Tight Lines,

Hey John, glad to hear the wedding went off without a hitch and everyonead a good time. I agree about taking the work when it's there, there are alot of people wishing they had done so instead of passing it by for personal things, once it's gone you can't get it back and later on when you need that extra couple of bucks,it's just not there.
We took the tuna trip on tuesday,we left at about 5AM,a 5 to 10 knot west wind is what we were supposed to have and instead we got started into a 15 to 20 NW wind. We cleared the inlet and immediately ran into 3 to 5 ft. whitecaps but we had done so much preparation and research for this trip that we decided to go and hope the weather would turn when the sun came up. We got about 30 miles into the trip and things got worse offshore, waves turned into 4 to 6 and came from 2 different directions, we were really getting beat up but we went the rest of the way to the cigar, when we got there there was only 1 scallop boat and us,not a very good sign. The scallop boat was heading away from us and didn't seem to look as if it was going to stop anytime soon,I was worried about the fuel situation and if the weather got any worse,we may run short for the trip home. We criss crossed the cigar from one end to the other without marking a single fish other than bait fish.I couldn't believe it,for the past 2 weeks they have been scoring real well on bluefin at that spot and every captain that I knew told us to go there as the bite has slowed at the other spots, the sea temp. charts showed a nice eddy right over the cigar so we really expected to nail them. After leaving there we moved to the 28 mile wreck and again nothing, same at the AC ridge and the AC reef, we tried that to see if we could pick up some fluke and at least come home with something, I caught a LING about 16 inches long and that was it,the one and only bite of the trip. The water was pretty dirty and we never did get to the blue water that we usually find there,it was a cleaner green at the cigar and got dirtier as we came back, the only thing good about the afternoon is the seas calmed quite a bit. We had used more fuel than I expected looking for fish so we thought if worse came to worse we could run into AC and refuel before heading to Little Egg,however with the seas calming down it wasn't necessary and we got back to the dock with 52 GALS. out of 218. We had a nice expensive ,rough as hell boat ride, but we did have fun and a few good laughs. Better luck next time,I guess.` |

Leo,
That sounds like a real adventure. No fishing for me this weekend. I have to work Saturday and Sunday. The good news is that I am on vacation next week but I have to work next Saturday and maybe Sunday. My wife's cousins rented a house at Ocean Beach and my wife offered me to take them fishing, cruising and day trips next week. Including her elderly aunt and uncle there are 8 adults including her cousin and his wife from Washington State who have not been around here for a number of years and they want us to take them on a few day trips. All I want to do is fish the week away and relax. This has to be the busiest summer ever.
Tight Lines,

John, I agree with you , I don't know how the hell you do it all, but I'll bet with the wedding out of the way you're resting a lot easier. Yeah, that trip was a bit of an adventure and I hope to not have any more of them ! I'll wait a few weeks and give it another try, hopefully the results will be different. Well, enjoy yourself being tour guide for the week, I'm sure everyone will be happy with you as captain, catch em' up, John ! |

Monday, August,18, Left at 5:15 to catch the outgoing tide with 5 of my wife's relatives and my son. We did not have to travel far, ( That is a good thing, the Wahoo started running hot. Kept quiet, got back, pulled the thermostat, found it was opening at 200 instead of 160 and replaced it. Now I think it is air bound. Today's project. They all went to Six Flags, Great Adventure today.) We caught over 30 weakfish in the 12 to 14" size. We kept 7, 17-18" fish for their meal. Back around 9:00. Everyone happy, but tired and complaining about getting up early.
Tuesday, August,19, Left at 5:00am with my son and 2 of our guests. We took the Dixie to fish a 5' hole surrounded by a 2' of water and in spots less. We had a steady pull of weakfish from 11 to 23". We kept 4. Back at 9:00.
The fished prefered sand worms on both trips, but they were caught on lures as well.
Be fishing tommorrow, my son and I.
Tight Lines,
John |

Saturday, August 30: Left at 5:30, Crew: my son and I. As soon as we started our drift, a steady pull of small to medium Black Sea Bass, followed by Kingfish and a Porgy and then an invasion of nice Weakfish. We kept a 20" and a 21" weakfish for dinner. Ran out of bait and was back by 7:30. One of the best days of the season with steady action. Planning to go out tomorrow morning.

Sunday, August 31: Crew: My son John, neighbor Bill and myself. The wind was blowing pretty good so we took the Wahoo. What a difference a day makes. We caught a few sea robbins, we knew we were beat when that was the first fish caught, a few kingfish and small blue fish. Back at 8:30.
