|

With Spring around the corner it is time to get ready for the Stripers. Clamming for Stripers is a very productive method and in order to reduce the catch and release mortality rate, non-offset circle hooks should only be used because they have been proven to greatly reduce the mortality rate. I prefer 5/0 NON-OFFSET CIRCLE HOOKS when chumming and using clams by just dropping into the slick. The stripers seem to congregate downtide away from the boat. Very rarely have I hooked one under or near the boat when chumming. When using circle hooks try to resist the temptation of setting the hook. When the fish starts hitting the bait I just point the rod to where the bass is and then wait for the big steady pull before reeling to hook up. Anyone else have any views or opinions on this method please post. We love to share ideas.

Well John, I do it pretty much the same as you. I also have not caught any near the boat. I will sometimes use baby eels and fish a certain spot up the river where the big fish seem to go and then I drag the eel through the sea grass (I guess thats what its called) and usually as soon as its clear I get a strike. I am going to try the circle hooks this year for the first time so I'll have to get back to you on that
